Bootham Stray forms part of the network of ancient grazing lands that surround York, preserving a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. These areas have historically been used by York's Freemen, who retain grazing rights that continue to shape the city's landscape today.

The stray provides a simple but valuable green space for local families and visitors. Its open character makes it ideal for walking, running and enjoying a breath of fresh air, while children have plenty of room to play informal games away from busier streets.

Although Bootham Stray does not have the facilities of a traditional park, its historic significance and peaceful atmosphere make it a fascinating place to explore. The wide grassy expanse offers a reminder of York's rural past, all within easy reach of the city centre.
