Dating back as far as the 13th century, the Shambles is one of the most famous and most photographed streets in England - and for good reason. The overhanging timber-framed buildings lean so close together overhead that in places they almost touch, creating a narrow, atmospheric passageway that has changed little in character since its days as York's main butchers' quarter. Original meat hooks and display shelves can still be seen on some of the buildings, silent reminders of the street's former trade.
Today the Shambles is home to a lively mix of mostly independent retailers - gift shops, sweet shops, a coin dealer, a ghost shop and a handful of cafes and tea rooms. It remains one of York's most visited spots, regularly featured in images of the city and consistently praised for its charm and character. It is an especially popular stop for anyone with an interest in magic and a certain young wizard! The street is pedestrianised and can be accessed freely at any time, though the shops and eateries within it have their own individual opening hours.
The Shambles is also closely connected to the story of Margaret Clitherow, a Catholic martyr who lived on the street with her butcher husband during the Reformation and was later canonised as a saint. A shrine to her memory can be found at number 35. The street connects easily with the wider Shambles Market and the surrounding lanes and snickelways, making it a natural starting point for a morning exploring York's historic city centre on foot.
