SPARK is one of York's most distinctive and welcoming spaces - a community-minded social enterprise built from repurposed shipping containers, tucked just off Piccadilly in the city centre. Since opening in 2017, it's grown into a proper hub for independent traders, with nine food and drink operators, four bars, creative studios, and a packed events calendar that includes open-air cinema nights, art markets, yoga classes, baby groups, and much more.
For families, SPARK is an especially good shout. There's a dedicated play area with a mud kitchen and free activity books for children, and the whole site is fully wheelchair accessible - with accessible loos, a wheelchair lift, and a ramp entrance. Dogs are welcome throughout, including in the co-working spaces, and the relaxed, no-reservations approach means you can just turn up whenever suits you. The midweek "£7 or under" trader specials are great value for a quick lunch out with little ones.
SPARK is more than just somewhere to eat and drink - it's a genuine community space run as a social enterprise, with a commitment to supporting local independents, living wage employment, and making York's city centre a more vibrant and welcoming place. Whether you're after a good coffee, an evening out, or something a little different to do with the family, it's well worth a visit.
