Knavesmire Wood is believed to have originated as part of the landscaped grounds of a grand house during the 18th or 19th century. Today, it retains much of its historic character, with mature broadleaved trees and an impressive lime avenue creating a distinctive setting for a leisurely stroll.
The woodland's surfaced central route makes it an easy choice for families and casual walkers, while the quieter perimeter paths offer opportunities to slow down and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Spring brings woodland flowers beneath the canopy, while birds including great spotted woodpeckers and tawny owls can often be spotted throughout the year.
Although relatively compact, Knavesmire Wood feels wonderfully secluded and provides a welcome contrast to the open spaces of nearby York Racecourse. It's an ideal destination for a short family walk, a dog outing or a peaceful moment immersed in nature.
Good to Know
- The central lime avenue has hard-surfaced footpaths suitable for pushchairs and sturdier mobility aids
- Dogs are welcome, but should be kept under close control and owners should clean up after them
- There are no toilets, cafés or formal play facilities within the woodland
- Limited roadside parking is available nearby, and the wood can also be reached on foot or by bike from the Knavesmire area
- Please stick to established paths to help protect woodland plants and wildlife
