Holy Trinity | Goodramgate

Holy Trinity Goodramgate is one of the oldest and most atmospheric medieval churches in York, a hidden gem tucked behind Lady Row with ancient stained glass, leaning box pews and a peaceful secluded churchyard.

Holy Trinity Goodramgate is easy to overlook - the entrance lies through a narrow gateway at the end of Lady Row, a row of humble 14th-century cottages that are among the most ancient domestic buildings in York. But step through and you find one of the city's most rewarding hidden spaces: a small, slightly uneven medieval church surrounded by a leafy, secluded churchyard, with the towers of York Minster rising behind it.

The church dates from the 13th to 15th century and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, which maintains it as a place of beauty and contemplation rather than regular worship. The interior is wonderfully intact - crooked arcades, worn stone floors, and a remarkable set of 17th- and 18th-century box pews that crowd the nave in a way rarely seen elsewhere. The stained glass is rich and dignified, with some medieval panels of real quality. Because the building was never heavily restored in the Victorian era, it retains an authentic atmosphere of accumulated centuries.

Holy Trinity is after St Mary Bishophill Junior the oldest medieval church within the city walls, and is one of several remarkable historic churches that reward those who take the time to seek them out in York. Entry is free and the churchyard provides a particularly pleasant place to pause during a walk through the city centre.
