Choral Evensong has marked the end of the day at York Minster for over 1,000 years, and it remains one of the most atmospheric ways to experience this vast Gothic cathedral. The Minster's choir, made up of choristers from the neighbouring Minster School alongside adult singers, performs a programme of seasonal readings, prayers and choral music that washes over the congregation in the candlelit quire.

Unlike a daytime sightseeing visit, which carries an admission charge, attending a service is always free, and visitors are welcome whether or not they're familiar with cathedral worship. It's a wonderful, low-key option for families who'd like to experience the building's scale and acoustics without the cost of a full visit.

Do bear in mind that this is a real, ongoing service rather than a performance, so younger children should be comfortable sitting quietly for around 45 minutes. It pairs nicely with a wider day exploring York's historic centre, on which the Minster sits at the very heart.
