This free circular walk starts at Beningbrough Hall car park and follows yellow way markers through woodland and parkland before joining the riverbank along the River Ouse, with sweeping views back towards the 18th century hall. Along the way there's plenty to spot, from spring bluebells in the woods to sand martins, herons, kingfishers and even the rare tansy beetle by the water's edge.
Around halfway round, the path reaches a small sandy area where the River Nidd meets the River Ouse - a lovely spot to pause, with views back towards the hall. It's a popular place for children to dip their toes in and play at the water's edge on a warm day, but it's important to remember this is a working river, not a designated swimming or paddling beach. The water can be deep, fast-flowing and unpredictable just a short distance from the shallows.
Families are welcome to enjoy the sandy area, but should keep a close eye on children and non-swimmers at all times, and treat it strictly as a place for paddling and toe-dipping rather than swimming. The walk continues past the Victorian water tower, through more woodland, and back via a picnic area before returning to the car park.

Good to Know
- Always keep a close eye on children and non-swimmers near the water, as river conditions can change quickly and are not always visible from the bank. There are no lifeguards along the river.
- Free car parking is available at Beningbrough Hall, including accessible parking bays close to the entrance.
- Toilets with baby changing facilities, a play area, shop and restaurant are all available at Beningbrough Hall (admission charges apply).
- Dogs on leads are welcome in the parkland but should be kept out of fields where livestock may be grazing.
- The walk is moderate difficulty, mostly flat with some hillier sections, and includes uneven, sometimes narrow riverside paths with tree roots. It's not suitable for pushchairs.
- Please stay on footpaths and avoid roaming into fields, taking extra care around grazing cattle.
